He was one of the three Gil reath brothers who moved to Whitley County, Kentucky. He received two warran ts in August 1822 for land on Marsh Creek in Whitley County , one for 50 acre s and another for 123 acres. In the same month, his brother Gideon received a grant of 81 acres on Marsh Creek. Brother William had in 1813 obtained a wa rrant for 100 acreson the same creek. In the 1850 census for Whitley County , Kentucky, Benjamin Gilreath was listed as age 65, a farmer with assets of $ 550. Gideon appears to have le ft Wilkes County, NC for Kentucky after the sale of his father's estate in 18 17. On August 9, 1822, he received a land grant of 81 acres on Marsh Creek in Whitley County near his brother William who had proceeded him to Kentucky. His brother Benjamin also received land grants in the same month indicating that they probably moved from Wilkes County, NC to Kentucky together. In the 1820 Census for Whitley County, KY, he is listed along with three older fema les, possibly his mother and his sister Nancy. He married Betty Ann Harmon i n Whitley County in May 1821 and remained in the County until his death in 18 67.
