Gideon Gilreath served for a short time as a Private in Capt. Ambro se
Carlton's Company, NC during the War of 1812. Gideon appears to have
le ft Wilkes County, NC for Kentucky after the sale of his father's estate
in 18 17.
On August 9, 1822, he received a land grant of 81 acres on Marsh Creek in
Whitley County near his brother William who had proceeded him to
Kentucky. His brother Benjamin also received land grants in the same
month indicating that they probably moved from Wilkes County, NC to
Kentucky together.
In the 1820 Census for Whitley County, KY, he is listed along with three
older fema les, possibly his mother and his sister Nancy. He married
Betty Ann Harmon i n Whitley County in May 1821 and remained in the County
until his death in 18 67. He is buried near his brother, Benjamin Jones
Gilreath, at the Pleasant R un Cemetery.
