  • Notes
    • On Nov. 1, 1708 William Bennett patented 294 a. in Stafford County on the main run of the Quantico River, adjoining Abraham Farrow. (Northern Neck Grants No. 3, 1703-1710, p. 189) On 26 May 1712 Thomas Bennett was granted 250 acres between the creeks of Chappawamsick, and Quanticott. The warrant was applied for by William Bennett on behalf of his brother, Thomas, 'now a minor'. (Northern Neck Grants No. 4, 1710-1712 , p. 76) On 31 August 1711 John Bennett and Rynhard De la Fayolle were granted 246 acres upon Occoquan River, adjoining land of John Hogan (Northern Neck Grants No. 4, 1710-1712 , p. 53). John Bennett's half of this land, 123 acres, eventually wound up in the hands of Mason Bennett, son of William. It appears from these records that William and Thomas are brothers, and that John is a possible third brother.

William Bennett married Margaret Mason, daughter of Edward Mason. Edward Mason died about 1691 naming his wife, Margaret, son George, and daughters Mary Ann and Margaret. Margaret Mason remarried by 1694 to Abraham Farrow. On 5 February 1694/1695 'Abraham Farrow of StaffordCo. who married the widow and relique of Mr. Edward Mason.' who is 'desirous to secure the title to Mr. Mason's children what was given to them by his will' is granted 800 acres on the south west side of Quanticott Creek land formerly granted to Edward Mason. (Northern Neck Grants No. 2, 1694-1700, p. 120-121)

Abraham Farrow died in 1730. His will was recorded 9 Jun 1731. In his will Abraham Farrow gave a portion of the above 800 acres to 'daughter-in-law Margaret Bennett the now wife of William Bennett.' This is an obvious reference to Margaret Mason, his stepdaughter. (Stafford Co. Will Book M, p 29-35)

After William Bennett died, the same parcel of land was repatented on 21 Dec. 1742 by his son William Bennett.

In 1724 Mason Bennet is shown as a 13-year-old boy in the household of William Bennet in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. Wm. Bennet Jr., age 11, is also in the household. ['Tenders of Tobaccoin Overwharton Parish,' in The Register of Overwharton Parish, by George H. S. King (Fredericksburg, Va.: Author, 1961), p. 161] This is a list of persons allowed to grow tobacco under a crop-restriction law. It shows all males over age 10 in each household. This family lived in the region between Aquia Creek and Quantico Creek. [So, Mason BENNETT was born ca. 1711, William Jr. was born ca. 1713]

In 1723 the House of Burgesses passed the Tobacco Act which was effective 1 Apr 1724. The act provided that all laboring persons may tend 6,000 tobacco plants and no more, and that male persons between the ages of 10 and 16 years may tend 3,000 tobacco plants. All male children 10 years and up are listed in the tobacco tenders. The tobacco tenders of Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co. shows William Bennett alloted 12,705 plants. His household shows two titheables, William Bennett and John Lowden and two sons, Mason Bennett, 13, and William Bennett, 11. That makes Mason born 1711 and William in 1713. A couple of other Bennetts show up in later records with Mason and William. They are George and Edward Bennett. My guess is that they are younger brothers. Margaret Mason's father was Edward Mason. Margaret also had a brother named George Mason.
