- In 1797 William Bennett married Sally Neal. 11 months later, their first child was born, a daughter named Elizabeth. It has been assumed by most researchers that this William was the son of James. With the help of other researchers, I have found good evidence that this is not correct. I believe the William who married Sally Neal was William K. Bennett, son of Thomas Fullilove Bennett. Below is an abstract of the Bedford County marriage bond, and 4 entries from Winston Dalton's journal.

William K. Bennett, son of Thomas Fullilove Bennett moved to Wilson County, TN by 1811. This is proven by a Pittsylvania County deed in which William K. Bennett of Wilson County, TN sold to Bartlett Bennett (his brother) 25 acres of land, part of a 300 acre tract belonging to his father Thomas F. Bennett. (DB 11:238) The witnesses to this deed were Shelton Dalton, Bowker Dalton, and John R. Dalton. In another Pittsylvania Co. deed (DB 19:299) William and his siblings gave to David Perry an 85 acre tract of land that was also owned by Thomas F. Bennett. This deed was witnessed by Winston Dalton. This establishes that Winston Dalton knew William K. Bennett. Indeed, they were neighbors until William moved to Tennessee.
On 27 Dec 1814 William K. Bennett and Charles L. Bennett witness a Bill of Sale from Eli Anderson to James Richmond. (Wilson Co., TN Court Minutes 1814-1829, p. 50) In March of 1817 Charles L. Bennett is held in jail in Nashville for murder. (Wilson Co., TN Circuit Court Records 1810-1821, p. 162) In April, 1818 William K. Bennett and his wife, Sally, appear in court for the trial of Charles L. Bennett. (Wilson Co., TN Circuit Court Records 1810-1821, p. 230-234) These records prove that the wife of William K. Bennett was named Sally.
William K. Bennett appears in Wilson Co., TN records to at least 1850. In the 1850 census he is enumerated in the household of Eli Goldston.
1850 Census of Wilson Co., TN Eli Gholston 56, TN Elizabeth 52, VA Amanda 14 William K. Bennett, 79
Notice that at age 52, Elizabeth's birth would have been in 1798, a match with the birthdate recorded in Winston Dalton's journal. Eli Goldston was also the surety for the marriage of Baxter Bennett, William's son. This provides a strong connection between two of the children from Winston Dalton's journal and William K. Bennett.
To summarize: 1) In the 1850 census of Wilson Co., TN, William K. Bennett was living in the household of Eli and Elizabeth Goldston. Elizabeth was 52 yrs old and born in Virginia. This matches perfectly with the Elizabeth born to William and Sally on 25 Feb 1798. 2) Eli Goldston who was surety for the marriage bond between Baxter Bennett and Elizabeth Chandler. This marriage bond was also from Wilson Co., TN. 3) William K. Bennett had a wife named Sally.
From these records it is evident that the William & Sally Bennett listed in Winston Dalton's journal refers to William K. Bennett, son of Thomas Fullilove Bennett.
