  Martha Wray is the daughter of Alexander Wray and Polly Barnes. She lived ner entire life in Rockingham Co., NC, where she was born. Martha Cole, 33, appears in the 1870 census living with her son William 15, and daughters Mary A. 13 and Susan E. 9. She is living in the Wentworth township. and is listed as Martha Coe. 1870 Census of Rockingham Co., North Carolina, Roll M593_1157, pg. 387. Alexander Wray (her father), 68, and Mary Wray (her mother), 68, appear immediately before her in the census. Andrew Wray (her brother), 36, appears after her. Martha Cole 50 appears in the 1880 census for Rockingham Co., NC. She is living with her daughter Mollie 23. 1880 Rockingham County, North Carolina Census, RollT9_980, p. 198. On 22 June 1885, Martha Cole applied for a widow’s pension under the the pension act of 1885 ratified on 11 Mar. 1885. She states in her application that she was the widow of Andrew J. Cole who enlisted in Co. E, 45th Reg. of the N.C. State Troops on or about 1 Oct. 1862 and that while serving died of a fever on 24 Oct. 1863. Martha Cole also ssated that she had not remarried. The application included a statement by A.W. Wray stating that he was acquainted with Martha Cole and verifying that she was was the widow of Andrew J. Cole.
