Mary Kennon (29 June 1679 -c.1740) married Maj. John Bolling (27 Jan. 1676/7 - 20 April 1729) of “Cobbs” 29 December (license) 1697. John was the son of Col. Robert Bolling of “Bolling Hall,” West Riding, York. Although many genealogists accept the tradition that Robert Bolling’s wife was Jane Rolfe, the granddaughter of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, no primary records substantiate it.
John Bolling, the father, was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1710-14, 1718, 1723-26). John Bolling, who patented 350 acres at Arrowhattocks in 1702, paid quit rents on 831 acres in 1704. In Henrico and Goochland counties north of the James he secured patents to 320 acres on Licking Hole Creek 1 April 1717, a 300-acre island 15 July 1717, 343 acres next to Amos Ladd 17 August 1720, 4,830 acres on Licking Hole 27 May 1726, 800 acres near Charles Fleming 6 May 1727, 400 acres above the Seven Islands 28 September 1732, and 400 acres below the Seven Islands 28 September 1732. In present-day Amelia County he got 2,353 acres on Flat Creek 18 March 1725/6 and added an adjacent 3,229 acres 28 September 1728.
John Bolling left a will in Henrico County (will dated 9 April 1727, recorded Aug. 1729). In 1736 Mary Bolling was living south of the James River in an area that was formerly part of Bristol Parish when she was taxed on seven levies and 500 acres.
