  The father of James Combs is not known. A William Combs appears in the 1840 census in Rockingham Co. The household of William Combs includes 1 male under 5, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 70-80. 1840 U.S. Census, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, Roll 369, p. 173. James H. Combs was married first to Susan Saunders, daughter of Aaron Saunders. His first wife died in April 1859. They had three children, all of which died at the same time in Aug. 1862. James Combs remarried shortly after the death of his first wife to Mary A. Rowland, daughter of Elizabeth Rowland who was unmarried. They did not have any children. He died on the 16 Oct. 1909 and is buried at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Ashland, Caswell Co.
