Burgess Witt was the son of Hezekiah Witt. He enlisted in the the North Carolina regiment in 1781 while living in Guilford Co., NC. He served as a private in Colonel Archibald Lytle’s North Carolina Regiment and was discharged 4 May, 1782.
AFter the ware Burgess Witt moved to Spartanburg District SC where he married on the 26 or 28 September, 1793 to Elizabeth Mayo. Burgess Witt was allowed a pension on his applicatin made on 18 October 1825 when Burgess Witt was 66 years old and residing in McMinn Co., TN. Burgess Witt died 16 December, 1843 and his widow was allowed pension on her application date 3 February 1844 while she was living in Monroe Co., TN.
Burgess Witt pension records identify some of his children. Valentine Witt was born in 1800 and was living in Monroe Co., TN in 1844. he was the third child of Burgess Witt. Hezekiah was born about 1803 and was living in Monroe Co., TN in 1868. Polly Witt was born about 1809. Burgess Witt was born about 1811 and was living in Monroe Co. TN in 1868. In 1868, Burgess Witt and Hezekiah Witt state that their mother died 23 October 1863 and that they were her only surviving children. However, there is a record indicating that Elizabeth Witt signed an oath of allegiance in 1866 at the age of 88.
Elizabeth Mayo, wife of Burgess Witt, had a brother named Valentine Mayo born 10 aug. 1767. Valentine Mayo married 15 December 1789 to Martha (maiden name not given), who was born 3 April, 1775. their children were Blackmore H. mayo, Robert A. Mayo, Nancy P. Mayo, George mayo, Velntine Mayo, Jr., Moses Mayo, James mayo, and martha Washington Mayo.
Burgess Witt had brothers Ares Witt (1 Jan. 1750) and Rutherford Witt (b. April 1774). Rutherford Witt was living in McMinn Co., TN in 1833. in 1834, Colonel john Kelly was referred to as the brother-in-law of Burgess Witt.
