  While not conclusive, there is strong circumstantial evidence that Sarah's maiden name was Pinkethman. The register of Charles Parish in York Co., Virginia records five births to Matthew Hawkins and his wife Sarah. The names of the children as recorded in the register are Thomas, Martha, Pinkeman (Pinkethman), William and Rebecca. At this time, it was common to use the mother's maiden name as a given name for a son. Therefore, the son named Pinkethman suggests that Sarah's maiden name was Pinkethman. There is also some documentary evidence to support the maiden name. A Rebecca Pinkethman died in 1707 in York County and left a will naming a son Thomas and a daughter Sarah. Both would have very young at the time. Sarah, wife of Matthew Hawkins, had a daughter Rebecca who is likely named after Sarah's mother.
