    • Thomas Gaskins arrived in Virginia aboard the Bona Nova in 1619. Hotten, p. 172. He was living at Flowerdieu Hundred on 16 Feb. 1623/24, but moved shortly thereafter to the Eastern Shore where he was listed in the muster taken on 7 Feb. 1624/25 as Thomas Gaskoyne, age 24. He patented 300 acres of land in Accomack Co. on 9 Sept. 1636 on the maine creek of the old plantation, now Northhampton Co. Patent Book 1, p. 377. He claimed as headrights himself and five other persons: Josisa Gambling (brother-in-law?), Josia Gaskins, Elizabeth Gaskins, Alice Gaskins, and mary Gaskins.

      By 15 Sept. 1649, Thomas Gaskins moved to Northumberland Co where he patented 250 acres in Great Wicocomoco River. Patent Book 2, p. 180 (as Gascoyne). On 24 May 1658, Thomas Gaskins deposed that he was about 57 years old, Northumberland Co. Record Book, p. 1652-1658, p. 141, and on 22 July 1661 he was declared exempt from levy becasue he was 60 years old. Northumberland Co. Record Book, 1652-1658, p. 143.

      Thomas Gaskins bought 1000 acres in Lancaster Co. from John Hughlett on 28 May 1658 and subsequently assigned the same property to James Jones and John Taylor on 24 Oct. 1659. Patent Book 5, p. 207 (as Gascome). On 14 jan. 1663/64, He patented with Henry Mayes 512 acres in Nothumberland Co. Patent Book 5, p. 308 (as Gascom and Moyse).

      Thomas Gaskins his will 20 June 1663 of which only a mutlitated copy remains. The will was proved 20 Nov. 1665 and names sons Josias, Thom., and Henry Gaskoyne, and son [in-law] Henry Mayes. Northumerland Co. Record Book 1658-1666, p. 171.

      The name of his wife is not known, but her maiden name was likey Gambling. Josias Gambling was named as a headright in one patent and on 19 July 1657 he gave a heifer to “my Cozen Elizabeth, daughter of Jno. Gamlin.” Northumberland Co. Record Book, 1652-1658, p. 113. “Cousin” at tis date usually meant nephew or niece. His children included Thomas, Elizabeth, Elita, Alice, Mary, Josias, and Henry.

      NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY.

      THOMAS GASCOYNE petitioned the court to administer the estate of his "mother-in-law," MRS. ELIZABETH PINKARD. The confusion lies in the fact that the term mother-in-law was used at that time to designate "stepmother". "JOHN TAYLOR, HENRY MAISE, JOSIAS GASCOYNE, HENRY GASCOYNE in behalf of the five orphans of Thomas Gascoyne, deceased, verses JOHN PINKARD, who married the relict [widow] of THOMAS GASCOYNE, and since being dead..."
