- Travis Carter Bennett was the son of Richard Carter, who died in 1775. In 1792, the Overseers for the Poor in Pittsylvania County bound out Travis Carter to John Spencer until 20 Oct, 1794 to learn the trade of bricklaying. Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Order Book 7, p 73 (order to bind out Travis Carter); Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Order Book 9, p 226 (ordering apprenticeship to John Spender). The very specific end date for the apprenticeship is likely to be the 21 birthday of Travis Carter, so his date of birth is 20 Oct. 1773.
It appears that Travis Carter was fostered by the Bennett family, who lived adjacent John Spence, and that he adopted the Bennett surname by the time of his marriage to Jenny Going. Travis Bennett appears in numerous transactions involving the children of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson. A sampling of the transactions include:
-John Bennett (son of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson) is bondsman for the marriage of Travis Bennett and Jenny Going. Jenny Going's brother, Sherwood, married Ruth Bennett, sister of John Bennett.
-Travis Bennett is bondsman for the marriage of Ralph Dodson and Elizabeth Bennett (daughter of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson).
-Travis Bennett is witness for a deed from James Gillespy to Thomas Bennett (son of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson). The other two witnesses for this deed were Roderick McDaniel, husband of Winifred Bennett (daughter of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson), and James Watson, husband of Milly Bennett (daughter of John Bennett and Elizabeth Dodson).
-Travis Bennett is witness for a power of attorney from Jesse Bennett to John Bennett. Other witnesses were Roderick McDaniel, Thomas Bennett and Dotson Bennett (son of Thomas).
DNA tests submitted by the descendants of Travis Bennett are a close match to the Capt. Thomas Carter descendants. See, Carter DNA project at Family Tree DNA.

The 1820 census shows that Travis and Jane had 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. At this point, only six have been identified. They are:
1. Sarah Bennett
2. Lewis B. Bennett
3. Hazel Bennett
4. Martha Bennett
5. Thomas T. Bennett
6. Benjamin Jackson Bennett
There is direct evidence for the first three. In her marriage bond, Sarah Bennett is named as the daughter of Travis & Jenny Bennett. Her brother, Lewis was bondsman. Lewis and Hazel Bennett are both named in the will of their grandmother, Sitha Logan, mother of Jane Bennett. All three of these children move to Butts County, Georgia in the late 1830s. Although enumerated in the 1820 census, there is no direct evidence of the names of the other children. However, the circumstantial evidence is compelling. All three, Martha, Thomas, and Benjamin also show up in Butts County, Georgia in the late 1830s. Martha Bennett, age 40, is listed in the household of Rowland & Sarah Thornton, her sister and brother-in-law in the 1850 census of Butts County.
