  • Notes

    • The will of Edward Mason was witnessed by Capt. George Mason (George Mason II). For this reason, some have theorized that Edward Mason was a brother of George Mason II. However, in 1691, Frances Maddock, the widow of George Mason I, surrendered her interest in the estate of her deceased husband to "Capt. George Mason, the only son and heir of Col. George Mason." Edward Mason lived in the same area as the more famous Masons, and they appear in legal documents together so it is reasonable to presume that there is some relationship. However, that exact nature of that relationship is not known. (Note: George Mason II is the grandfather of the author of the Bill of Rights).
