Mecklenburg County VA Will Bk. 3 pg. 89 (p.77)
In the Name of God, Amen. I John Shanks of the County of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia being in a low State of health and Infirm in Body though in perfect senses, through the Grace of Almighty Do make this my last will and Testament.
Item I do Appoint Constitute and Ordain William Shanks and Robert Stadler of the County of Granville and State of North Carolina To be my Executors. Item I give and Bequeath my Soul to Almighty God and my Body to be Interred Decently where best suits my loving wife. Item I do Appoint my Executors To pay all my just and Lawful Debts for my Executors to sell as much of my Property as shall be sufficient to pay them with. Item I give and bequeath to my loving wife Lydia all the rest of Property which I now possess her life time and at her Death to be Equally divided among my Seven children Viz: John, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Charles, Robert, and Thomas. Item of the money ? be collected by my Executors that is coming to me from William Sloan and other Debtors that to be Divided in the manner. Item One part to my two Daughters and ?parts to my five sons Each Sharing two parts for the Girls one. Item if it is to be got from Obadiah Martin my land in Caswell County North Carolina that shall be Equally Divided between Robert and Thomas Shanks of my land is Recovered from Armisted Churchill in Kentucky Item, that my Executors shall equally divide among my five sons Viz: John, William, Charles Robert and Thomas Item I Desire Robert and Thomas to have sufficient schooling having now Disposed of my mind in this my last will and Testament

At a court held for Mecklenburg County the 9th day of January 1792 this will was proved by the Order of William Shanks and Robert Stadler witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded.
