  • Notes

    • William Montgomery died in 1811 in Guilford County naming a son George Montgomery. The death certificate of Elivira Jane Montgomery indicates that her father was George Montgomery and gives Guilford County as his birthplace. So far, I have not seen any evidence of another George Montgomery in Guilford County, so the George Montgomery named in the will of William Montgomery (1811) is tentatively identifed as the father of Elvira Jane Montgomery. The will of William Montgomery (1811) is transcribed below.

A George Montgomery married Rachel Bratton in Rowan County on 26 March 1815. At that time, Rowan County bordered Guilford County. Joshua Gefford was the bondsmand and Sol. Davis was the witness. Rowan County, North Carolina Marriage Bonds, Part I, p. 316; digital image, FamilySearch.com, FHL microfilm 001760520

James Montgomery is listed in the census on the same page immediatley above George Montgomery. The household of George Montgomery includes 2 males < 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-45 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 26-45. 1820 U.S. Census, Guilford Co., North Carolina, Roll M33_85, p. 105.

Davidson County was formed from Rowan County in 1822. Davidson County borders the southwest corner of Guilford County.

      A George Montgomery appears in the 1830 census in Davidson Co., North Carolina. His household includes 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 female < 5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 40-50. 1830 U.S. Census, Davidson Co., North Carolina, Roll 120, p. 243.

George Montgomery (60) is living in the household of Samuel J. Piggot (37) and Asenith Piggot (24) in Davidson Co., North Carolina in the 1850 census. Samuel Piggot is his son in law. He was born in North Carolina and worked as a carpenter. 1850 U.S. Census, Davidson Co., North Carolina, Roll M432_628, p. 264A.
