| Note |
- The will of William Gilreath names six children, Martha, Hilliar H., Henry, Rebecca, Susan, and Delilah. In the 6th bequest of his will, William Gilreath leaves the remainder of his estate not given in previous bequests, to all his children living at the time of his death and to his grandson, Hiram H. McCoy, to be divided equally among them. This leaves a possibility that William had other children not specifically named in his estate. This is in fact the case. Evidence shows that Hardy Jones Gilreath of Greenville County, South Carolina is a son of William Gilreath. Hilliar H. Gilreath, a proven son of William Gilreath, died intestate in Wilikes County, North Carolina about 1856. Hilliar outlived his wife and died without issue, therefore, his estate was divided into five equal share and distributed to his siblings. The distributees of this estate were Rebecca Triplett, John J. Triplett (husband of Susan), the heirs of Henry Gilreath, the heirs of Delilah McCoy, and Hardy J. Gilreath. Hilliar's sister, Martha, is not mentioned and must have died without issue before Hilliar. The final account of the estate of Hilliar Gilreath, dated 9 May 1872, shows $41.84 paid to Hardy J. Gilreath. Similarly, the last return for the estate of Hardy J. Gilreath, dated 25 May 1872, shows that it received $41.85 from the estate of Hilliar H. Gilreath (Greenville County, South Carolina Estate Files, Apartment 29, File 13). All of the distributees of the estate of Hilliar Gilreath, except Hardy J. Gilreath, are children who were named in the will of William Gilreath. Therefore, this researcher concludes that Hardy Jones Gilreath is the son of William Gilreath.
