    Note
    • There are other Herron families listed in the 1820 census of the Pendleton District. These are listed below. These Herrons lived in an area that is in Anderson Co., SC today. This is far from where Joshua Herron lived. I have not established any connection between these Herrons and our family.

Alfred and Joshua appear on adjacent lines in the 1840 census and Alfred named his first son Joshua and his first daughter Sarah. John named one of his sons Alfred Burton Herron. That is the only evidence I have of a relationship between Joshua and Alfred & John, proximity andfamily naming patterns. Joshua is old enough to be the father of Alfred & John, and they live very near each other. Alfred and John do not appear on any of the deeds as witnesses.

1850 Census of Pickens County, SC
Western District, Enumerated 27 Aug 1850 by Thomas Lee
      Series: M432 Roll: 857 Page: 399A
      HN 407, FN 428
Joshua Herron, 70, M, Farmer, real property $165, born in NC
Sarah Herron, 72, F, born in NC
      FN 429
Elizabeth Herron, 40, F, born in NC
Bethany Herron, 18, F, born in SC
Melissa Herron, 14, F, born in SC

Note that Elizabeth Herron, age 40, appears in the household of Joshua Herron. Elizabeth has two daughters, Bethany, 18, and Melissa, 14.Elizabeth and her two daughters appear to be the younger females listed in the household of Joshua Herrin in the 1840 census. Both Bethanyand Melissa married Barnes'. The death certificate of Bethany Barneslists her parents as Elizabeth Herron and Jack Selby. Elizabeth Selby appears next door to Bethany Barnes in the 1860 census of Rabun Co., GA. This is apparently Bethany's mother. Her surname is recorded as Herron in the 1850 census and Selby in the 1860 census.

Joshua owned two tracts of land. The first was a 145 (or 155) acres tract on Lick Log Creek he purchased from Gideon Norton in 1822. If you read the description of the property you will find there are no neighbors. All surrounding land is vacant. Joshua sold this land to Daniel Sims in 1832.

The second tract of land was for 112 acres on Lick Log Creek purchased from James Billingsley in 1831. The purchase price was $300. Joshua sold this land in Joseph Grisham in 1837 for $106.88. This seems alittle unusual. Elizabeth Herron seems to have sold this same tract of land in 1848 to Evan Nicholson for $300. I am not sure what is going on here. This is likely the same Elizabeth Herron who appears in the 1850 census in the household of Joshua Herron.

When Joshua sold his first tract of land in 1832, the deed was witnessed by a Moses Horne/Heren. Moses may be a son of Joshua. Right nowI can only speculate.

The 1850 Census indicates that Joshua owned real property valued at $165. Both tracts of land mentioned above were sold before this date.I have found no legal record of any other land owned by Joshua. It is possible that Joshua purchased other land but never had the deed recorded.

Joshua Herron also acquired a land warrant. I have found no evidence so far that he was ever granted the land. The warrant was executed in Pickens District and recorded in 'Pack 114' in the Pickens Courthouse.

    Note
    • Joshua Herron first appears in SC records in the 1820 census of the Pendleton District.

1820 Census of Pendleton District (Includes present day Pickens, Oconee and Anderson Counties)

      Male of 26 & under 45: 2

      Female of 16 & under 26: 2
      Female of 26 & under 45: 1

Notice that there are 6 males in the household other than Joshua, 5 who are 16 or under. There is another male in the 26-45 age group who would be too old to be Joshua’s son. We will call this person the mystery man. We can only speculate on who this person might be. Mike Hearne obviously believes that this is Joshua’s brother Moses. But, there is another possibility that Mike has overlooked. More on that later. There are also 4 females in the household, one would be his wife, Sarah. Since Joshua is 40 years old at this time, he could have two daughters between the ages of 16 and 20. I can only identify the youngest daughter. The two older girls are absent from any records that I know of after this point.

On 28 Dec 1822, Joshua Herron purchased 155 acres of land on Lick Log Creek in Pickens County from Gideon Norton. This deed was witnessed by Jeptha Norton. Remember this name. It shows up in some records in which some Herrons are involved and is one of the ways that I know that it is the right Herron group. Joshua Herron appears to have been a reasonably prosperous person. He owned two tracts of land. Joshua signed his name indicating that he was literate. All his children used a mark. But, it appears that this prosperity did not descend to his children. The family seems to have had very hard times in South Carolina.

The next record for Joshua is the 1830 census.

1830 Census of Pickens County, SC
      p. 307 Joshua Herrin
      Male 10 to 15: 2
      Male 15 to 20: 2
      Male 20 to 30: 1
      Male 40 to 50: 1
      Female 50 to 60: 1

This is consistent with the 1820 census. It appears to shows Joshua and 5 other male children. All daughters are absent. This is not really noteworthy as the youngest daughter would be at least 20 years old, so all could be married and living with their husbands by this time. The mystery man is absent from this record. Since he is absent and all five male children remain, I am assuming that all five are sons of Joshua.

On 15 Mar 1831, Joshua Herron purchased 112 acres on Lick Log Creek from James Billingsley. This is the second tract of land owned by Joshua.

So, what I have done is to look for all records of Herrons with some connection to that corner of the state. I have found 6 different males, 5 of which seem to be the correct age to be children of Joshua. The sixth, is too old to be a child, but he could be our mystery man. Here is what I have found.

      Children of Joshua Herron
      1. Moses Herron – On 4 May 1832, Joshua Herron sold 145 acres on Lick Log Creek (this is the same tract he purchased from Gideon Norton) to Daniel Sims. This deed was witnessed by Moses Herron and William Sims. Since Moses Herron appears in the same record as Joshua, we actually have good evidence that these are related individuals. In 1837, some residents of Pickens District, petitioned the legislature for relocated the village of Pickens to a new location. County petitions were filed by other residents opposing this motion. One of these opposing petitions was signed by Moses Herron, James Herron, and Alfred Herron (South Carolina, Legislative Petitions, Series S165015, Item 04411, SC Archives, Columbia). Other signatories for this petition are William Sims, William Sims, Jr. and William M. Morton. William Sims, along with Moses Herron, was a witness to the Joshua Herron deed. At the time of this petition, William M. Morton is the future father-in-law of William Herron. That is the last record I have for Moses. I have an idea that he moved to Georgia, but not much to back it up.
      2. James Herron – James Herron appears in only two records that I have found so far. First, James Herron appears on a jury list for Pickens County in 1835. Second, in 1837, he signed the legislative petition I mentioned above. In this second record he is joined by Moses and Alfred Herron so we know that he is associated with our family. That’s it. There is no record of James Herron after 1837. James and Moses appear to be the two oldest sons.
      3. John Herron – John is the middle son. Another copy of the legislative petition against moving the courthouse was signed by J. Herron in 1837. (South Carolina, Legislative Petitions, Series S165015, Item 04406, SC Archives, Columbia.). This copy was also signed by Jeptha Norton who was a witness to the first Joshua Herron deed. This could be either Joshua or John. John is absent from the 1840 census. The household of Joshua Herron contains no male children and there is not a separate listing for John Herron. An 1842 jury list for Pickens County shows John Herron with the notation, “not found in District.” This supports the conclusion that John is not simply enumerated in another household in Pickens County, but that he has left the county altogether. John is back in Pickens County for the 1850 census where he is a neighbor of Joshua and Alfred Herron. The oldest son of John is named Alfred, perhaps after John’s brother. John died before the 1860 census so there are no additional records of him. I have found his grave in the Wolf Pit Cemetery. I believe that John and Moses Herron moved to Georgia. Since Moses signed the legislative petition in 1837, and then was absent from the 1840 census, I believe they moved between these two dates. The only evidence I have to support this is the 1860 census which lists the birthplace of John’s children as Georgia. The jury list does indicate that John was not found in the District. A John and Moses Herron do appear in the 1840 census of Lumpkin County, Georgia. Dahlonega is located in Lumpkin County. This was Cherokee territory by treaty until gold was discovered. Dahlonega became the site of the first gold rush in our nation’s history. So much gold was being found in that in 1838 the US opened a mint in Dahlonega. I wonder if John and Moses went to Lumpkin County in search of fortunes. In any case, John returns to Pickens Co., SC by 1850. Moses Herron stays in Georgia.
      4. Alfred Herron – Alfred Herron first appears in the legislative petition mentioned above. He is listed adjacent to Joshua Herron in the 1840 census. He is also a neighbor in the 1850 census. Alfred Herron named his first son Joshua. 70 year old Jane Maloy is listed in Alfred’s household in the 1850 census. I am presuming that this is his mother-in-law making his wife Elizabeth Maloy. There is a significant chance that this is not correct.
      5. William Herron – William Herron is the youngest. I can place William in Pickens County in 1841. On 4 Jan 1841, Joseph Sims and others sold 145 acres on Lick Log Creek to Evan Nicholsonwith William Herron and William M. Morton as witnesses. William M. Morton is the father-in-law of William Herron. This is the same land sold by Joshua Herron to Daniel Sims. After Daniel Sims’ death, his heirs, by this deed, sold the land to Evan Nicholson. I should note here that Evan Nicholson also purchased the second tract of land owned by Joshua Herron. In 1850, William Herron is found in the census for Rabun Co., GA in dwelling #346. These Herrons lived along the Chattooga River which forms the border between South Carolina and Georgia. While most lived in SC, some can be found on the other side of the river in Rabun Co. Several neighbors of William in the 1850 census have notable connections to the Herron family. James Billingsley, dwelling #359 sold Joshua Herron 112 acres on Lick Log Creek in Pickens Co., SC in 1831 (Deed Book C-1, Page 301). In 1848, Elizabeth Herron sold this same 112 acres to Evan Nicholson who is enumerated in dwelling #345 (Deed Book F-1, Page 153). Manly Teague and his wife Milly are shown in dwelling #357. Milly is widow living in the household of Elizabeth Herron, widow of Alfred, in the 1870 census of Macon Co., NC. And lastly, another Herron, 52 year old Joseph, is listed in dwelling #351. Hmm. Just who is Joseph Herron. He is too old to be a son of Joshua. Perhaps he is the older male enumerated in the household of Joshua Herron in the 1820 census of Pendleton District.Joseph Herron could be our mystery man. William Herron is in Franklin Co., Ga for the 1860 census and returns to Oconee Co., SC for the 1870 census. He is buried in the Wolf Pit Cemetery where John Herron is buried. Several children of William are also buried in the Wolf Pit. I have death certificates for some which indicate their mother’s name as Nellie Morton. Nellie Morton is the daughter of William M. Morton who appears in several records involving the Herrons.

That is basically what I know about Joshua Herron. I am aware of the records involving a Joshua Herron in Rutherford Co., NC and Spartanburg Co., SC. There are also two Joshua Herrings in Sampsons Co., NC in 1810. One is missing in 1820, so he is another possibility.
