- Benjamin and James Bennett first appear in the Pittsylvania County tax list in 1773 with their tithes charged to Wililam Bennett. This indicates that James and Benjamin were still minors at this time. James and Benjamin are first listed on their own in 1776. If this indicates that they had reached the age of majority, then we can estimate their birth year as 1755. Since James & Benjamin first appear as minors the same year, and both are first listed individually on the same year, it is possible that James and Benjamin were twins.
In the late 1770s and early 1780s, there was a large migration of families from Pittsylvania County to Montgomery County, Virginia. Among those moving were William Bennett, his sons Thomas, James and Benjamin, and Elijah Bennett, son of Thomas. William Bennett,Thomas Bennett, James Bennett, and Benjamin Bennett all appear on the 1782 personal property tax list of Montgomery County. Each one of these men is absent from the 1782 tax list of Pittsylvania County. Benjamin Bennett is listed adjacent to Meredith Smith on this tax list. In a 1780 Pittsylvania County deed, Thomas Bennett of Montgomery County, Virginia sold his interest in 100 acres of land to William Mitchell. (DB 6:70-71) This deed links the Montgomery County Bennetts to Pittsylvania County. Pittsylvania County researchers will recognize many other names on the Montgomery County tax list.
Thomas Bennett, James Bennett, and Elijah Bennett were in the Montgomery County Militia from 1782-1784 in the company of Captain William Bobbett. The majority of persons in this company were from Pittsylvania County. Benjamin Bennett also appears in the militia list in the company of Captain Samders between 1782 & 1784.
Thomas, Elijah, and James Bennett all return to Pittsylvania County by 1785. William and Benjamin do not. It is likely that William died in Montgomery County. A peson by the name of Benjamin Bennett appears around this time in the records of Stokes County, North Carolina. In 1781, Benjamin Bennett recorded a land entry for 100 acres of land in Stokes Couunty. A warrant was awarded, but was transferred. Benjamin Bennett appears in the 1784 tax list of Stokes County, NC adjacent to Meredith Smith. The oral tradition of the descendants of Benjamin Bennett is that Benjamin was married to a sister of Meredith Smith and that they came to Stokes County from the Clinch Vally area of Virginia. An entry in a Moravian dary on 4 May 1783 records that Richard Bennett, son of Benjamin Bennett, was baptised and that the family had recently come from Virginia. (Bethania Diary, 1783, Records of the Moravians in North Carolina, Volume IV, 1780-1783, edited by Adelaide L. Fries., M. A.)
In the 1775 tithe list of Pittsylvania County, Virginia shows Elias Smith with sons Meredith and John living in the same area as the Bennetts. Elias Smith is on the 1784 tax list of Stokes County, North Carolina. Elias, Meredith and John are all on the 1785 tax list along with Benjamin Bennett. The 1786 census of North Carolina shows Elias, Meredith, and John Smith and Benjamin Bennett. Elias Snuith, Meredith Smith, John Smith and Benjamin Bennett all appear in the 1790 census of Stokes County, North Carolina. These records show that Benjamin Bennett of Stokes County, North Carolina migrated from Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Montgomery County, Virginia, and then to Stokes County, North Carolina with the family of Meredith Smith.
