    • Tunis Cole was born about 1783 in Virginia. It is not certain from where he came. A Tunis Cole gave an oath of allegiance in Pittsylvania Co., in 1777. This could possibly be the father of Tunis Cole.  In 1819 he purchased 74 acres of land on Wolf Island Creek in Rockingham Co. This is the first known record of Tunis Cole in Rockingham Co.       Tunis Cole appears in the 1820 census in Rockingham Co., NC. Tunis Cole is listed with 1 male 10 -16, 1 male 1 male 45+ (Tunis), 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 45+. A Housen Cole is the 5th entry following Tunis Cole.  1820 Census, Rockingham Co., NC, Roll M33_82, p. 598. Nore: Housen Cole was the son of james Cole who died in Rockingham Co. in 1809. There is an estate record for James Cole that identifies his ten children, including Housen.

      Tunis Cole married Leah Mobley in 1846 in Rockingham County. Marriage Bond # 000119182. Leah is mentioned in the estate records. 

      Tunis Cole is recorded in the 1840 census in Rockingham Co. His household includes 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60 (Tunis), 1 female 20-30 and 1 female 50-60. Athal Carroll is head of the household immediately before Tunis Cole. Athal Carrol married Jane Cole, daughter of Tunis Cole in 1833. R.L. Corum is the head of the 4th household followng tunis Cole.       Tunes Coal is recorded in the 1850 census in Rockingham Co. He is living with his wife Leah (Leaer in the census) and a one year old female child identifed as F. E. Cole.       Tunis Cole is recorded in the 1860 census in Rockingham Co. He is 77 yeaars old. His wife Leah is living with him and is 50 years old. A female child named Frances Cole is living with them. Frances is beleieved to be the granddaughter of Tunis Cole, by his son A. J. Cole.  Thomas Combs 30 and Martha Combs 34 appear in the household of William Corum 27 and Francis Corum 24 next to Tunis Cole.
