Notes - John McCollister was born about 1845 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He is the son of William McCollister and Nancy Carroll. In the 1860 census, he is living with his grandfather, Daniel Carrell. The census states that he is 15 years old. It is presumed that his parents are deceased by this date.
In deed dated 2 Feb 1866, John McCollister his interest in the estate of his father William to James Irvin. Rockingham County, North Carolina, Deed Book XX, p. 173. He was only 21 years old at the time. The deed states that John McCollister had a one fourth undivided interest in the real and personal property of William McCollister, which was being conveyed to James Irvin. This record implies three siblings.
William McCollister's estate included a 336 acre tract called the Home Place on the waters of Wolf Island Creek formerly owned by Levin McCollister, which William purchased from the estate, less 47 acres which William McCollister sold in his lifetime to Andrew Hudson; a 12 acre tract purchased from Tunis Cole; and unspecified personal property.
In a deed dated 26 July 1867, Charlotte Matlock, John Carrell, Thos. D. Carrell, Mary E. Carrell, Fanny Wray, Martin Miller and wife Sarah, Turner Barber and wife Jannella, and John McCollister sold a tract of land on the waters of Wolf Island Creek containing 42 acres to William Lindsey. Rockingham County, North Carolina, Deed Book YY, p. 283. The grantors all appear to be heirs of Daniel Carroll. All except John L. McCollister are children or their spouses. John L. McCollister is the grandson of Daniel Carroll. His parents, William McCollister and Nancy Carroll died before 1860.
