- Ann Browning Robertson was living with Johnston Abner Bennett in the 1870 census and listed as an aunt. (Note that Johnston is incorrectly identified as D. A. Bennett in the 1870 census). Johnston Abner's wife is named Elizaeth Smith. Based on the stated relationship, Bettie Collie speculated that Ann Robertson was Ann Shackelford, wife of Thomas Bennett. This assumption was not correct.
Ann Robertson is found in the 1860 census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, the wife of Aaron P. Robertson. Caswell County, North Carolina marriage records show that Aaron P. Robertson and Ann Browning were married 15 Nov. 1838. Ann was born in 1795, so she would have been 43 at the time of her marriage. This appears to be a second marriage for Aaron Robertson and a first marriage for Ann. I do not believe that Aaron and Ann had any children together, so Ann would not have any children. They have one 14 year old girl in the household, Mary A. Simpson, who is the granddaughter of Aaron. Aaron died in 1863 and left a will naming Ann and his children and grandchildren
Ann Browning Robertson is the daughter of Robert Browning, who died in Caswell Co. about 1842/43. He left a will dated 28 Jan. 1842 naming Ann Robertson Will Book P, p. 18. Robert Browning had a son John who married Mary Smith. He also had two daughters that married Smiths. His daughter Frances married Samuel Smith. His daughter Ava P. married John C. Smith. In the 1850 census, we find Elizabeth A. Smith, age 22, living in the household of Samuel & Frances Smith. John & Ava Smith are listed in the next household. So, Ann Browning is the aunt of Elizabeth Smith, wife of Johnston Bennett.
