    enlisted in the Continental Army 
    • They marched to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where they remained for a week until an express was received commanding them to join Washington at his headquarters. On the march to headquarters he was taken with smallpox. During his confinement, he could hear the cannons at the battle of Germantown while lying in his bed. He rejoined his company after recovering from his illness and served until his three months expired.

    • They sailed in France and made the passage in 18 days, which was believed to be the shortest passage that had ever been made. They sailed for a while with a French fleet with more than 90 ships of various nations. They cruised the coast of Spain and returned home near Cape Henry. On return voyage, they captured a British privateer and brought her in to Alexandria.

    • Escorted Merchant vessels out of Chesapeake to Amsterdam, Holland. On passage, they captured a large British merchantman and William Dove was one of eight men detailed to take command of the prize. They brought ship with four prisoners to Philadelphia in July 1780.
