2054 William J. Dove is absent from the 1870 census. His wife and children appear in the 1870 census in Caswell County, North Carolina. It can be inferred that William J. Dove was deceased at the time of the census. Dove, William J. (I9101)

2055 William K. Bennett is the son of Thomas Fullilove Bennett. He married Sally Neale in Bedford Co., VA about 17 Mar. 1797 (bond). They lived in Bedford and Pittsylvania Co. until about 1811, when they moved to Wilson Co. TN. Pittsylvavnia Co. Deed Book 11, p. 238. At that time William K. Bennett of Wilson County, TN sold to Bartlett Bennett (his brother) 25 acres of land, part of a 300 acre tract belonging to his father Thomas F. Bennett. Id. The witnesses to this deed were Shelton Dalton, Bowker Dalton, and John R. Dalton. In another Pittsylvania County deed,, William and his siblings gave to David Perry an 85 acre tract of land that was also owned by Thomas F. Bennett. Pittsylvavnia Co. Deed Book 9, p. 299. This deed was witnessed by Winston Dalton and establishes that Winston Dalton knew William K. Bennett. Indeed, they were neighbors until William moved to Tennessee.

On 27 Dec 1814, William K. Bennett and Charles L. Bennett witnessed a Bill of Sale from Eli Anderson to James Richmond. Wilson Co., TN Court Minutes 1814-1829, p. 50. In March of 1817 Charles L. Bennett is held in jail in Nashville for murder. Wilson Co., TN Circuit Court Records 1810-1821, p. 162. In April, 1818 William K. Bennett and his wife, Sally, appear in court for the trial of Charles L. Bennett. Wilson Co., TN Circuit Court Records 1810-1821, p. 230-234. These records prove that the wife of William K. Bennett was named Sally.

William K. Bennett appears in Wilson Co., Tennessee records to at least 1850. In the 1850 census he is enumerated in the household of Eli Goldston. 1850 U.S. Census, Wilson Co., TN. The household Eli Gholston (56) includes his wife Elizabeth (52), daughter Amanda (14), and presumed father-in-law William K. Bennett (79). According to the census, Elizabeth was born in Virginia. The age and place of birth for Elizabeth Gholston maches the age and place of birth for Elizabeth Bennett. The fact that William K. Bennett is living in his household in 1850 and other records linking him with the Bennett family is convincing evidence of the marriage between Eli Goldston and Elizabeth Bennett.

2065 William Reynolds, Hugh Reynolds, William Neely, and William Devin all appear in the 1757 tax list for Martic Township in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. William Neely is the father-in-law of Hugh Reynolds as evidenced by his Pittsylvania County will naming his daughter Mary Reynolds and grandsons Joseph and William Reynolds. Jospeh Reynolds, sonof Hugh Reynolds, married Margaret Devin, daughter of William Devin. William Devin also left a will in Pittsylvania County naming a son Robert. In his Revolutionary War pension application, Robert Devin stated that he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 6 April 1759. These records show that Hugh Reynolds, William Devin and William Neely migrated to Pittsylvania County from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Reynolds, Hugh (I1397)

William Tilson was granted 282 acres of land in Washington Co., Va on26 Jun 1786 (Grants 3 Page 346-348). This parcel of land was dividedand sold in three tracts as follows: 85 acres to Thomas Tilson on 21 Aug 1792 (DB1:270-271); 95 acres to William Tilson, Jr. on 21 Aug 1792(DB1:271-272); and 92 acres to Thomas Tilson on 18 Mar 1811 (DB4:433) William Tilson, Sr. appears in the Washington County, VA tax list through 1811 after which he is absent from the list. The sale of the third tract may have been preparation of William Tilson, Sr. for a move to Tennessee.

William Tilson was in the French War and served a considerable time; was in Capt. Josiah Thatcher's Co., Col. John Thomas' Reg., and landedat Halifax, N. S., May 11, 1759; served until Nov. 1. He again entered the service Jan. 1, 1760, in Nova Scotia, and dis. Dec. 18, 1761. He moved to Tenn. and located near this three sons,k onHolo chucky River, four miles from Erwin. In 1799, William Tilson is charged with only one tithe and Stephen Tilson appears on the tax list for the first time. 2072 Winston Dalton, in separate entries in his journal, refers to Micajah as both Micajah Wheeler and Micajah Wheeler Bennett. I have always assumed that Winston was old when he wrote this and that this was just an error in his journal. However, Mary Foote Lund has shown me that his name also appears both ways in official records. After studying this information, it appears that his true surname was Wheeler. Since Charity Wheeler is inovled in several important records, there is a good possibility that she is Micajah's mother. Micajah named his first daughter Charity. William Bennett, son of Peter, also seems to be a very important person. This is speculative, but I see two possibilities worth researching. It is possible that Charity Wheeler was widowed and then later married William Bennett. If Micajah was very young, he could have taken his stepfather's name and still used Wheeler in official records. Alternatively, Micajah could be the illegitimate child of Charity Wheeler and an unkown Bennett, perhaps William.
Below is some information sent to me by Mary Foote Lund:

"I have found evidence that Micajah Wheeler Bennett did in fact use Micajah Wheeler in addition to Micajah Wheeler Bennett/Micajah Bennett. This wasn't just a slip on Winston Dalton's part. On a recent visit to the Library of Virginia I located Micajah and Patsey Pullen's marriage bond records which include her father's consent and the bond. They both have some peculiarities, but most noteworthy is that the bond is issued to Micajah Wheeler Bennett, while the consent was for the marriage of Micajah Wheeler and Patsey Pullen written in Thomas Pullen's hand.

If he used Micajah Wheeler, 2 indentures in the Pittsylvania Deed records are pertinent, and they do fit with his timeline. On 3 Feb 1801 Micajah Wheeler purchased 220 acres on the Great Branch of Old Womans Creek from Ambrose Colyer, the indenture being witnessed by Martin Dalton, James Dalton and Stephen Toler. This is less than 2 years after Micajah and Patsey's marriage. On 13 April 1804 Micajah Wheeler sold the same land to William Burnett, both "of Pittsylvania County." The Indenture is not witnessed but is signed by both Micajah and Patsey Wheeler. Micajah and Patsy/Martha Wheeler Bennett were living in Franklin County in 1810 when he died, and when Patsy appears in the census, and references to other legal proceedings imply he had lived there for some time. He did not buy land in Franklin County under either name, however.

My brother, an attorney, says that land records always were very important, the most important part of the law, and the standards were very strict. Micajah may have gone by Micajah Wheeler Bennett, but these land records strongly suggest his 'legal' name was Micajah Wheeler (assuming these are the same person). This might be the case if he was raised by a Bennett step-father who never officially adopted him.

The few documents I have include only one Bennett. The marriage consent was witnessed by Stephen Toler (who also witnessed the deed) and William Bennett. And, it seems they were more than casual witnesses. The consent reads "Sir It seems to be agreed to amongst us that there be a Marriage between Micajah Wheeler & Patsey Pullen. Please grant a license for officiating the same. given under my hand this 20th day August 1799 Thomas Pullen" Not very enthusiastic. (Between 'Wheeler' and 'Patsey' is a coarse addition that may be a 'B,' as if a clerk may have been bothered that the consent and bond were in different names.)

William Bennett also appears in Micajah Wheeler Bennett's estate papers. The final accounting of his estate provided by his administrator includes 2 payments totally over

2073 Winston Dalton, the brother of Asenath Dalton, kept a journal in which he recorded various events. His journal contains the following entry:
