John Washington and Anne Pope. Anne was born 1662 in Westmoreland Co., VA; died Mar 1697 at Great House Point, Westmoreland Co., VA. She is buried in the Bridges Creek Washington Family cemetery. Her brother Lawrence was the Grandfather of our 1st President George Washington. She was left her mother's rings, in her father's will. The long intimate friendship between the Wrights and Washington’s suffered a mutual loss in the death of Capt. Lawrence Washington in March, 1698, whose will, naming his deceased sister Anne and her husband Francis Wright, conveys an esteemed impression of the social and intellectual position and material independence of these allied families. The Washington’s at this time resided along Pope's and Mattox (Appomatox) creeks in the northern part of Westmoreland near where the national memorial to the family: Montross, Westmoreland County, Virginia Deeds & Wills No. 2 pg. 133, etc: "Item I give and bequeath to my sister Anne Wright's children, one man Servant a piece of four or five years to serve or Three Thousand pounds of Tobacco to purchase the same, to be delivered or paid to them when they arrive to the age of twenty years old Item I give that land which I bought of my Brother Francis Wright, being 200 acres lying near Storke's Quarter, to my son John Washington (etc) 11th day of March, Anno Dom. 1697-8." Anne (Washington) Wright had died before the date of his will, March 11, 1697-8, hence no bequest to her, and hence the reference of the testator to being buried by the side of my Father and Mother & neare my Brother and Sisters, in the family burying ground on the original Washington estate near Pope's Creek in Washington parish, Westmoreland, where now stands the tall granite shaft erected by an act of Congress. The death of Anne (Washington) Wright, when aged under thirty-eight, is also established in the deed of sale, executed by her only son John Wright and his father, of land she had inherited from her father Col. John Washington. (Montross, Westmoreland county, Virginia. Book entitled Deeds & Wills No. 4 Page. 175) Francis & Anne Washington married between 1680 or 1682. Their only son, John, was born 25 Feb 1685/1687 in Westmoreland Co., VA. Anne Wright was the child of Francis’s 2nd wife, Martha Cox, whom he married about 1709. Richard Wright was also the child of Martha and Francis. Francis Wright died, in June 1713, age 53, and was buried in his own estate at Lower Machodoc in an enclosure (doubtless near the "great house") perpetually to be reserved to the Wright descendants. The real estate fell to the elder son, John, under the law of primo-geniture, John being, as well, the sole heir male to the landed estate of his mother, Anne Washington Wright. “ === | Wright, Francis (I1191)

| 255 | Frederick Stier was apparently born in Rockingham Co., NC. His father, Daniel Stier, moved to Rockingham Co., NC sometime before 1800 and is listed in the 1800 census. Fredrick Stier appears in every census from 1830 to 1880. He died in 1885 at the age of 85. Fredrick Stier married Elizabeth Cunningham about January 15, 1827. They are listed together in the 1850 census. Frederick and Elizabeth appear to have seprated prior to the 1860 census. Note: The female in the 10 to 15 age group is likely Martha Stier, who was born about 1826 and married Thomas Combs in 1850. The older female is his wife Elizabeth Cunningham. The 5 to 10 male would be John N. Stier. | 257 | From Our Southern Cousins by Virgiinia Sanders Mylius, “Anne Wright was born about 1660 in Chickacone, Northumberland Co., VA. Anne Wright, daughter of Captain Richard Wright, inherited the estate upon the Potomac adjoining the present Mount Vernon: Anne Wright's inheritance from her father: "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne Wright all that my said land in the 'ffreshes' of the Patomack River." And she received on September 6, 1665, from her uncle and guardian, Colonel Nicholas Spencer, "in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have towards Anne Wright my niece, the daughter of Richard Wright within mentioned deceased" one-half of the eleven hundred acres at Mount Vernon on the Potomac which he had patented with her father, September 25, 1661, the other half of which she had inherited. This patent was recorded by Colonel Spencer in Westmoreland County on the day of his gift. Anne Wright married George Nicholas Hacke, born in Accomac County, Virginia, son of Dr. George and Anna (Herman) Hacke. Dr. Hacke was born at Cologne, Germany, in 1623, and appeared in Virginia in 1653; his wife was born at Amsterdam, Holland, sister to the noted Augustine Herman, founder and lord of the great manor of Bohemia extending from Chesapeake Bay (in Cecil County, Maryland) across Delaware to the Delaware River.) (An account of Dr. Hacke appears at page 256 of Volume V of the 'Virginia Magazine of History and Biography'.) Anne (Wright) Hacke did not long retain her eleven hundred acres at Mount Vernon, as she removed to the long, low promontory, Accomac County, between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. | 258 | From Our Southern Cousins by Virgiinia Sanders Mylius, “JOHN WRIGHT (1685/87 Westmoreland Co., VA - 1730 Prince William Co., VA), son of Francis Wright, was proven by Hoppin, without question, to be a son of Anne Washington. Quotes from "The Washington-Wright Connection" by Charles Arthur Hoppin, state: "JOHN WRIGHT, though gentle born and gently reared.... seems from the records like a man who to himself said, "Le me be no assistant for a state, but keep a farm." "John Wright was a better sportsman than farmer or merchant and more pleased with entertaining than in advancing his political or private fortunes. That his inheritance was sufficient unto his needs scarcely can be gainsaid. he bought but little land, and sold a large amount. Eventually he sold out entirely and removed to another part of Virginia; not to his own personal enhancement but, most fortunately, to the ultimate advantage of his children, especially to his long-lived second son, John. John Wright, however, neglected no public duty and, as was to be expected, succeeded his father as attorney, sheriff's deputy, surveyor, vestryman and judge; and he is always of record as a "gentleman", maintaining his excellent social position. John moved (1723) to the newer settlement in the present Price William county, as a pioneer, where one can scarcely doubt he was a first justice and sat at the first court held therefor. "He passed the short remainder of his life in the quiet comfort and enjoyment of his own estate, possessed of fund ample to the indulging of his own social pleasure and for the education and preferment of his two known sons, Francis (who died young)and John, whose long and honorable career confirmed the wisdom and garnered the resulting opportunities of his father's removal from Westmoreland. The wife of John Wright was a Dorothy, but was not Dorothy (Awbrey) Wright. Dorothy Awbrey was the wife of John Billups. June 21, 1856 Meredith Jennings, aged 69 years, resident of Madison County, Tennessee, filed application for Bounty Land under provisions of Act of 3 March 1855. He declared he was Ensign in the Co. commanded by Captain Nat. Terry in the Regt. of Va. Militia commanded by Col. Greenhill, War of 1812; that he was drafted in "Pytsylvania" Co. about the 1st day of September 1814 for 3 months, and that he continued in actual service for 3 months and was honorably discharded at Elliott's Mills, date not remembered. Wit: R. T. McKnight, J. B. Hetton, residents of Madison County, Tennessee, before Stephen Syfert, J. P. June 21, 1856: John M. Morrill of Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee forwarded to the Pension Office the application of Meredith Jennings and requested that the Warrant be sent to himself if granted. December 2, 1856 The Third Auditor's Office reported that Meredith Jennings served in Capt. N. Terry's Co. of Va . Militia from the 1 through the 17th of September, 1814. June 11, 1857 Warrant No. 67157 for 100 acres was issued Meredith Jennings (National Archv.: Bounty Land File). From the book "Documented Notes on Jennings and Allied Families" --- This Jennings family originiated in Ireland and the original American ancestor emigrated from that country sometime previous to the Rev. War and settled in the colony of Virginia. Meredith Jennings, father of J.A. Jennings was born in Virginia in 1780, and became a pioneer to Belleview, Ky, removing a short time thereafter to Caldwell County. He and his wife Tabitha Mustain (married on December 14, 1807 in Pittsylvania County, VA), went to Missouri where they spent their declining years with their children. Meredith Jennings died near Calhoun, Mo in 1870 at 90 years of age. J. A. Jennings was born in 1833 in Pittsylvania County, VA. When he was 12 years of age his parents moved to Belleview Ky. J. A. Jennings was known as "Dudley" Jennings. He died on April 2, 1911 in Princeton Ky. Other Notes Include: Meredith Jennings, Ensign, Virginia Militia, War of 1812. | 260 | George Berry is found in Northumberland County by 1650 when he testified in behalf of his brother-in-law, George Knott in Aug of 1655. He gave his age as 32, making his date of birth 1623. His sister Elizabeth Berry Knott gave her age as "36 or thereabouts." Elizabeth married John Bennett following the death of George Knott. George Berry witnesses will of John Draper in 1656 in which John Bennett received bequest. By 1658 George Berry had died and John Bennett was adm. of estate as the husband of George's sister. | 261 | George Carrington immigrated to Virginia from Barbados in 1723 and is the progenitor of the Carringtons in Virginia. He married Anne Mayo, daughter of William Mayo in 1732. They lived at Boston Hill in Cumberland Co. Virginia. His family bible survives and is now preserved in the Virginia State Library. During his life, he patented 25,300 acres of land. He occupied many public positions including clerk, justice, and surveyor, He was a member of the House of Burgesses. during the revolutionary war, he was a member of the Committe of safety. He was also at times a member of the State Conventions and General Assembly. He and his wife died within a few days of one another in 1785. He married first to Sarah Stephens, daughter of Edward and Sarah Stephens, with whom he had four children: Christiana, Ann, William, and Sarah. His wife Sarah died Feb. 1746. He remarried to Ann Booker, the widow of Thomas Booker. George and Ann had two children: Betty and Thomas. George married a third time to Moldred Bellamy, widow of William Killigrew, with whom he had four children: Rebecca, Alice, Elizabeth, and George. George Crymes moved to Lunenburg Co. in 1755. In July 1796, it was ordered that overseers of the poor of Camden Parish bind out James Mustain, a child of Jesse Mustaine, dec'd.(8:226). At the August Court, 1797, "Thomas Mustain was appointed guardian of John, Jesse, James, Priscilla, Winifred, Susanna, and Tabitha Mustain, orphans of Jesse Mustain, dec'd. Whereupon the said Thomas Mustain together with David Pannill his security entered into Bond according to law." (8:376). In the BRITISH MERCANTILE CLAIMES 1775-1803, "Jesse Mustain L6.8/11 signed settlement Pittsylvania store. He died several years since and left sufficient estate. David Pannel is his administrator." In the October Court, 1782, "Thomas Doss and Salley, his wife,against Jesse Mustain. In Trespass, assult and battery. The parties having agreed..dismissed. It is thought that Jesse started to build his home there including the dower of Mary Mustain. (D & W 11,page 216). In 1803 Avery Mustain, brother of Jesse, and guardian of theorphans, sold the property to Benjamin Gosney for 11L, 11 shillings,current money of VA (DB 13, page 362). At the August Court 1797 (8:377), "Jeremiah Barker and Anna his wife complains against Thomas Mustain as well on behalf of himself as guardian of Jesse Mustain, John Mustain, James Mustain, Priscilla Mustain, Winifred Mustain, Susanna Mustain, and Tabitha Mustain, Heirs atlaw of Jesse Mustain dec'd..that Avery Mustain, Zachariah Lewis and Griffith Dickinson do advertize and see the land whereof the said JesseMustain died." Why Jeremiah Barker and Anna his wife made this complaintis not known. At a further trial of this suit on Jan. 1798 it is noted that on Dec. 17, 1797, Mr. Benjamin Gosney became the purchaser of the land. June 16, 1794, it was ordered that Mary Mustain, widow and relict of Jesse Mustain dec'd be summoned to show cause why she will not take the administration of the estate of the said Jesse Mustain. Henry Carroll wrote a will dated 18 Dec 1832 that was probated in Nov 1835. He names in the will daughters Sally Barber, Nancy Overby, and Lany M. Carroll; sons William Carroll, Daniel Carroll, and James Carroll; wife’s son Leven McCollister. Executors were his friend Thomas Wilson and son William Carroll. R. Walker and B. He was born in 1770, so he is only 10 years younger than Henry Carrell. Thus, it seems likely that Henry married an older widow. The 1800 census also indicates that Henry’s wife is older than he. In the 1800 census, the oldest male (likely Henry) is 26-45, while the oldest female likely Henry’s wife) is 45+. Eleven McCollister is recorded in the 1840 census. He is 60-70 years old. Levin McCollister left a will dated 18 Dec. 1848. The will names mentions son William McCollister, and his daughter; grandson John McCollister who he left land on Wolf Island Cr,; grandchildren by his daughter Sally Smith whom he left land on Piney Creek where Levin McCollister lived and formerly belonging to his son John McCollister dec’d; and grandchildren by daughters Polly Christopher and Elizabeth Barber. He named frineds George and James Irvin as executors. W.G. Hudson and J.H. Boyd witnessed the will. A notation indicates that the will was set aside in 1850. Rockingham Co. Deed Book D. p. 252. (Webster, p. 70). On 10 Mar. 1796, Sutton McCollister sold 55 acres on Wolf Island Creek to Annanies Green. The land was adjacent William Young. Rockingham Co.
