2005 While not conclusive, there is strong circumstantial evidence that Sarah's maiden name was Pinkethman. The register of Charles Parish in York Co., Virginia records five births to Matthew Hawkins and his wife Sarah. The names of the children as recorded in the register are Thomas, Martha, Pinkeman (Pinkethman), William and Rebecca. At this time, it was common to use the mother's maiden name as a given name for a son. Therefore, the son named Pinkethman suggests that Sarah's maiden name was Pinkethman.

There is also some documentary evidence to support the maiden name. A Rebecca Pinkethman died in 1707 in York County and left a will naming a son Thomas and a daughter Sarah. Both would have very young at the time. Sarah, wife of Matthew Hawkins, had a daughter Rebecca who is likely named after Sarah's mother.

2034 William Bennett and Hannah Goad lived in the northern part of Pittsylvania County around Pigg River and Frying Pan Creek near Hannah's father, John Goad. On 16 Nov. 1773 John Goad gave a deed of trust in favor of James Mitchell to 160 acres of land where he lived by William Bennett's line. The deed of trust was recorded 25 Nov. 1773. Pittsylvania County Deed Bk. 3, pg. 402 Bennett, William (I303)

2035 William Bennett and his wife Hannah later conveyed this property by deed of gift to William's grandsons, Reuben and William Bennett, sons of Peter Bennett. Bennett, William (I303)

2036 William Bennett appears in the 1801 property tx list for the Shores Reed District in Stokes County. He is not listed in 1800. This places his date of birth about 1780.

Census records give William Bennett's age as follows:

16-25 in 1810, born between 1775 and 1784
26-44 in 1820, born between 1766 and 1784
45+ in 1830, born <=1775

These records place his date of birth about 1775 -1780. His father Benjamin was living in Pittsylvania County at the time of his birth.
Bennett, William (I9369)

2037 William Bennett is identified as the father of Salley Bennett in the marriage record of Lewis Hardey and Salley Bennett. Family F1385

2038 William Bennett is likely the son of Benjamin Bennett, The identity of his mother is not known. Benjamin Bennett lived in the Shores Reed District in Stokes County. William Bennett also appears in the same district on the Stokes County tax list when he comes of age. William apparently lived his entire life in Stokes County. He is listed in the U.S. Census in Stokes County in every census from 1800 until 1850. In 1810 and 1850, he is listed in the Shores Reed District. Bennett, William (I9369)

2039 William Bennett is shown on the 1748 tithe list of Peter Phelps with sons Jospeh and Peter. William Bennett, son of William, is absent from this list. John Goad is listed on the same page. Bennett, William (I303)

2040 William Bennett is shown on the 1749 tithe list of Nicholas Haile with sons Joseph and Peter. William Bennett, son of William, is absent from this list. Bennett, William (I303)

2041 William Bennett is shown on the 1750 tithe list of Nicholas Haile with sons Joseph and Peter. William Bennett, son of William, is absent from this list. Bennett, William (I303)

2042 William Bennett Sr. appears on the Montgomery Co. Tax List in 1782 with sons James Bennett and Thomas Bennett. He is listed as untithable. William Bennett would have been about 79 years of age at the time. In an earlier deed in Pittsylvania Co. William's son Thomas Bennett is described as being from Montgomery Co. William's son James is listed as a landowner. These facts suggest that William Bennett moved to Montgomery Co. in his later years with sons James and Thomas. James and Thomas eventually returned to Pittsylvania County. It is likely that William Bennett died in Montgomery County before their return to Pittsylvania County. The DAR Patriot Index indicates that William Bennett died in 1783, probably in Montgomery Co. No will has been found for William Bennett or Hannah Bennett. Bennett, William (I303)

2043 William Bennett was baptized 2 June, 1703 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co., Va. His parents were William Bennett and Sarah Brumwell of the parish. (Register of Christ Church Parish)

William Bennett married Mary Humphries 9 April 1724. (Register of Christ Church Parish)

William Bennett and Mary Humphries had five children - Peter (bap. 21 June 1724), Elizabeth (bap. 1 Dec. 1726), William (bap. 5 Jan. 1728), Joseph (bap. 6 June 1731), and Richard (b. 6 Feb. 1733 and bap. 10 March 1733).

William Bennett had sons Thomas (b. abt 1742) and Stephen (b. abt. 1744) whose mothers are not currently identified. They are too old to be be children of Hannah Goad show was born in 1732. They could be the children of Mary Humphries or another unknown wife of William Bennett.

William Bennett married Hannah Goad. There is no record of their marriage. The will of John Goad dated July 7, 1771 mentions his daughter Hannah Bennett, whom he left 1 shilling. William's son Peter was a witness to the will. The will was probated July 23, 1771. Bedford County Will Book. 1, pg. 132.

William Bennett and Hannah Goad probably had at least two children - James and Benjamin (b. abt 1755). James is identified as the son of William and Hannah in Winston Dalton's journal.

William Bennett moved to Lunenberg County (now Pittsylvania County) by 1750, where he appeared on the First List of Tithables. Peter Bennett and Joseph Bennett also appeared on the list. They are most likely the sons of William Bennett.

William Bennett purchased 264 acres from the estate of Richard Randolph of Henrico Co. by deed dated 27 Sept. 1760. for 11 pounds five shillings. The land was located on the south side of the Staunton River along Bennett's Creek. Witnesses to the deed include John Goad (William's father-in-law) and Timothy Dolton/Dalton. William Bennett and Hannah Goad lived in the northern part of Pittsylvania County around Pigg River and Frying Pan Creek near Hannah's father, John Goad. On 16 Nov. 1773 John Goad gave a deed of trust in favor of James Mitchell to 160 acres of land where he lived by William Bennett's line. The deed of trust was recorded 25 Nov. 1773. Pittsylvania County Deed Bk. 3, pg. 402

On Feb. 1, 1776, William Bennett and his wife Hannah conveyed 70 acres of land to William's grandson, William Bennett, Jr. This land was part of a tract conveyed to William Bennett by the Executors of Richard Randolph. William Jr. was the son of Peter and Francis Bennett. William Bennett is identified in the deed of gift as William Bennett, Sr. Pittsylvania Co. Deed Book 4, pp. 107-108

On Feb. 1, 1776, William Bennett and his wife Hannah conveyed 194 acres of land to William's grandson, Reuben Bennett.
